Portland Ghosts
The Wilcox MansionPortland Ghosts
7. The Wilcox MansionTheodore B. Wilcox, a native New England banker who made money in the China flour trade business, built this Victorian mansion in 1893 for his family. His story is one of ambition and achievement. Wilcox came from humble beginnings, working his way to the top until he was the primary stockholder of the Portland Flouring Mills Company. When Wilcox died, his son was given the mansion and lived in it until almost 1950. In 1957 KWJJ, a country music radio station, moved into the building. It is since then that ghostly apparitions have been seen, giving the Wilcox Mansion nearly 60 years of haunted history. A common sight is of a cleaning woman on the stairs. This doesn't seem too out of the ordinary until it's told that the woman is wearing an old-fashioned uniform and is almost transparent. She will sometimes make eye contact with her earthly companions, but then promptly disappears. When the station’s DJs were working late into the night, the grand piano would sometimes play on its own. Chandeliers would swing randomly without explanation. On particularly horrifying nights, CDs and records would fly off the shelves, hitting the DJs while they were on air. Cabinet doors, four at once, have shut simultaneously without explanation.
