Tryon Creek State Park is an oasis within the metropolitan area of Portland. Starting in 1874, the Oregon Iron Company used this land to log virgin cedar and fir trees. The lumber was used mainly for railroad ties and flagpoles. Since the 1960s the area has been free of loggers and used as parkland. It is just before storms when most of the activity is seen and heard. It is a common belief in the paranormal community that thunderstorms can be catalysts for supernatural happenings, and that seems to be true at Tryon Creek State Park. Along the North Rim Trail there have been reports of hearing horses and equipment being moved around, and there is even an accompanying smell of sawdust and fresh cut timber. By Tryon Creek, men in Edwardian garb are seen getting ready for work and practicing with axes before disappearing right before your eyes. Sometimes their disembodied voices linger. The last time the area was logged was in the late 1950s, so the experiences appear to be unexplained; the men seem to be going on with their daily lives and jobs, unaware that their livelihood is no longer viable in the forest-turned-national-park. The next time you're in a Portland thunderstorm, head out to Tryon Creek. Who knows what you might see.
