During the Civil War, the Kimball Theater used to be a house owned by the Ware family. The dwelling was used as a refuge for those who lost their homes during the war. Mrs. Elizabeth Ware, a widow of many years, and her daughter volunteered to house a young Confederate who was gravely injured at the Battle of Williamsburg. Unfortunately, the man died in the home and was placed in the parlor, to await the disposition of his body. Soon after, Federal troops searched the homes for Confederate soldiers. When a Union soldier arrived at the Wares' house, he was led to the covered body lying in the parlor, where he was shocked to find the mangled remains of his brother. The brothers had disagreed on the issue of states' rights, which led to their choosing different sides in the war. After the grief-stricken soldier left Williamsburg to join his fighting comrades at Richmond, he too was killed in battle. It is believed, however, that his spirit has returned to the place where he last saw his Confederate brother. In the Kimball Theatre, now located on the former grounds of the old Ware House, people have observed a mysterious man in blue lurking in the shadows.
