28. PBK HallPhi Beta Kappa hall is the theater for the College of William and Mary, and many students believe that it is the one of the most haunted buildings on campus. The hauntings date back to the late 1960s. Lucinda is the name of one of the infamous ghosts, and you might see and hear her apparition in the lighting booth or the stage manager?s box. In 1969, music student Larry Raikin was practicing piano by himself. When Larry finished playing, he went to leave the building. But not before he heard a chilling voice say "Oh, don't stop." The student looked around to see who spoke. He searched the theater and turned on all of the lights. But when Larry checked the scene room behind the stage, a fuse blew out, shutting off all of the lights in the theater, while the door to the stage room slammed shut behind him, leaving the terrified student in total darkness until he was able to find his way out and run from the building. One year later, Larry and a friend stayed late at night to clean up after a concert held at the hall. They decided to have a little fun and act out an opera. Larry once again took to the piano, when his friend shouted out in fright as he saw the figure of a woman dressed in a long black dress and black veil drift from the stage manager's box to the other side of the stage. Another student, Wayne, opened a door he found in the lowered pit of the theater. Sparks flew as he opened the door, and an organ began playing in a room below the pit that had not worked in years. He watched in amazement as the organ, which was old and had not worked for years, played itself. Other students have reported seeing a white clad figure in the balcony, and feeling a rush of air, weird and cold, almost transparent, which has a strange crypt like odor. Many report strange noises and sounds coming from the catwalks above the stage. No one knows who Lucinda is, but there are two theories. First, she could be a L. Battey, who was killed in a farming accident or car crash. The second and most common belief is that she was a student actress that was supposed to wear a wedding gown in one of the plays, but died tragically before her performance. In a later performance, a lead actress used the same gown. One evening, she arrived early and alone to practice her lines. Shortly after she arrived, the wedding gown rose up, and floated upright in one of the chairs as if it was watching her. One night, the campus police saw a light shine from the balcony, where they saw a figure standing in the balcony. When they rushed to the balcony, they found the same wedding dress folded on a chair. Then, strange noises lured took the officers on a wild chase through the theater's halls. Of course, they found nothing.
