The Godfather I and II
Bar VitelliThe Godfather I and II
6. Bar VitelliBar Vitelli, where Michael asks Apollonia's father if he can marry her, still stands today. It is located in Savoca, Sicily. Since Al Pacino does not speak Sicilian, Coppola adjusted the scene so that the bodyguards are the main speakers. He wanted to create a harmonious flow by having actual Sicilian speakers used for translation. Also, preventing Michael from speaking Sicilian portrays him as classy because he is not objectifying Apollonia, as he may have done if he were to try and speak Sicilian incorrectly. You may hear the word lupara in this scene. A lupara is the Sicilian word for a double-barreled, sawed-off shotgun that is usually homemade. You can see Fabrizio and Calo carrying these weapons, which are traditional Cosa Nostra, or mafia, weapons.
