South LaSalle Street functions as the central street in Chicago's downtown financial "loop." It's popularity increased as it became the essential street location for Batman's Gotham. LaSalle Street's historical and architectural surroundings provide a magnificent antique backdrop for two of the most memorable scenes in The Dark Knight. Hosting the funeral procession for the late Commissioner Leom, LaSalle street increased the suspense of the scene with it's many skyscrapers layered with windows. Lurking behind any one could be the famed Joker, waiting to fulfill his promise of assassinating the mayor of Gotham. It's here that the Joker eludes the Gotham City Police Force once again as him and his henchmen masquerade as the rifle squad, front and center to the Mayor, who is saved by Gordon's quick action bravery. Following the procession, the audience is allowed a full width view of the street which is lowered to appreciate the famed buildings surrounding the stage where the procession ends. The most memorable one to Batman fans being the Chicago Board of Trade building, just beyond the stage where the mayor gives his speech. Terminating the canyon stretch of LaSalle street, the aforementioned Chicago Board of Trade Building served as the headquarters for Wayne Enterprises in Batman Begins. LaSalle street was also featured in the culmination of the thrilling chase scene among Gotham City Police Department, The Batman, and The Joker in The Dark Knight. Actual helicopters were flown just feet off the ground over LaSalle street, but much to Director Nolan's dismay their crash was computer generated, though a clever feat by The Joker who continued his insane pursuit of D.A. Harvey Dent. Demonstrating the speed, durability, and weaponry of his newly introduced Bat Pod, The Batman utilizes the grappling hooks to enable to the iconic truck flip on LaSalle St. Director Nolan, being determined to make everything as real as possible, worked with special effects supervisor to bring another of his visions to life. A massive air ram was fired out of the bottom of a large semi-truck, launching the vehicle over fifty feet into the air to complete a 180 and land on it's top side. Thanks to this daring stunt and the skilled driving of trained stunt driver, The Joker was apprehended...temporarily.
