The Carnegie Mellon Institute of Industrial Research building was built to perform work for the government and industry on contract. Merging with the Carnegie Institute of Technology to form Carnegie Mellon Institute, the building no longer represents a distinct institution, but the name remains. Now housing the university's office of the dean and other administrative offices, the landmark building remains an important part of the campus. Noted for it's Neoclassical architecture consisting of the largest monolithic limestone columns in the world, the building provided a symbolized structure in The Dark Knight Rises. Here, a momentous scene is filmed in which Gotham City Police Department stands ready to fight for their city against the ruthless mercenaries in hand to hand combat. Encouraged by the appearance of The Batman, the police force runs head on into the weapon infested crowd, clashing in front of the city's symbol for law and justice, Gotham City Hall. The building stands firm in the background of Bane's speech where he denounces Harvey Dent and retracts the Dent Act. Claiming that Gotham is the people's to overtake without any interference, Bane begins his reign in the forefront of Gotham's City Hall. He meets his downfall within the building during his final battle with Batman. It's here that Batman discovers the truth behind Miranda Tate and her connection with the League of Shadows.
