In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, there are flashbacks to Harry's father tormenting a much younger Severus Snape. This was filmed at Blenheim Palace, a stately home in Oxfordshire. It is home to the Duke of Marlborough and was also Winston Churchill's birthplace. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. The structure is one of England's largest houses, with its construction spanning the years from 1705 to around 1724. It is a true palace, and the only one in the United Kingdom not currently occupied by royalty. The rare example of English Baroque architecture was a gift to the First Duke of Marlborough, John Churchill, for his success against the French and Bavarians in the Battle of Blenheim. It has remained the home of the Churchill family ever since and is the current residence for John George Vanderbilt Spencer-Churchill, the 11th Duke of Marlborough. The house, gardens and park are open to the public for a modest entry fee during most of the year. Tours of the private apartments where the family lives are available during the summer.
