In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, when the trio of Harry, Hermione and Ron are aimlessly wandering in search of horcruxes, the suspension bridge where they tromp through mud is the Severn Bridge located just north of Bristol. It opened in 1966, spanning the River Severn and the River Wye via the Beachley peninsula, linking England to South Wales. The project was conceived in order to replace the Aust Ferry. Construction took fives years and cost £8 million. The first proposal for a bridge in this location came as early as 1824 to improve mail delivery. As long as rail travel dominated, which the Severn Railway Bridge at Sharpness served since its opening in 1879, a road bridge was deemed unnecessary. It wasn't until cars became a more predominant form of travel that a bridge was reconsidered, although firm plans did not begin to take shape until after World War II, with construction finally beginning in 1961. The entire crossing is actually composed of four separate structures: Aust Viaduct, Severn Bridge, Beachley Viaduct and Wye Bridge.
