Outdoor scenes around the Hogwarts School in Harry Potter in the Chamber of Secrets were filmed in Glencoe, Scotland, an area rich in picturesque mountains that are popular with hillwalkers and ice and rock climbers. The area also carries historical significance, as this was the area that the Massacre of Glencoe took place in the 1690s, in which members of the Campbell clan, acting on order of King William II, killed members of the MacDonald and Henderson clans. A popular area for holidays, there are numerous chalets and cottages, as well as an array of bed and breakfast style inns. The Glencoe Visitor Center, built in 2002 and operated by the National Trust for Scotland, contains a coffee shop, gift shop and information about the area.
