Filming Locations of Harry Potter
Durham CahedralFilming Locations of Harry Potter
19. Durham CahedralIn the first film, the snowy quadrangle of Hogwarts, where Harry sets the owl flying, is part of the cloisters of Durham Cathedral in the northeastern City of Durham, County Durham. Although the Bishopric started in AD 995, the present cathedral wasn't founded until AD 1093. This UNESCO World Heritage site, a designation it received in 1986, is considered one of the most striking examples of Norman architecture anywhere in the world. For nearly 800 years, the Bishopric exercised both religious and military leadership, and projected power from the cathedral's location on a strategic promontory above the River Wear. The central tower rises 217 feet into the air, giving visitors spectacular views of the surrounding lands.
