46. Reptile HouseIn Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, Harry discovers he can communicate with snakes and subsequently liberates a boa constrictor from its cage in the Reptile House at the London Zoo. The London Zoo is the world's oldest scientific zoo in the world, dating back to 1828. It's also one of the largest collections with 16,800 animals representing 755 different species. When it first opened, it was only used by scientists, but was subsequently opened to the public in 1847. It is located at the northern end of Regent's Park, situated directly on the border separating the City of Westminster and Camden. Other firsts from this zoo include the opening of the first Reptile house in 1849, the first public Aquarium in 1853, the first insect house in 1881, and the first children's zoo in 1938. Fearing that tropical animals would not survive London's winter weather, the animals were kept indoors until 1902 when the zoo was overhauled to bring many of the species out into the open, where most thrived.
