Duke Humfrey's LibraryFilming Locations of Harry Potter
18. Duke Humfrey's LibraryDuke Humfrey's Library, part of the Bodleian Library at Oxford, is where Harry tries researches Nicholas Flamel, the creator of the philosopher's stone, in the first movie. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, this is where Hermione seeks knowledge of the polyjuice potion. In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, it is where Harry and Hermione try to figure out who to take to Slughorn's Christmas party. Bodleian is one of the oldest libraries in Europe. The Duke Humfrey room, completed in 1488, was built above the Divinity School to house the many manuscripts he donated. It is the oldest reading room in the Bodleian Library, now used mainly to review maps, music, and rare books from before 1641. Duke Humfrey himself was the 1st Duke of Gloucester and a son of Henry IV. He was a great lover of literature and facilitated the translation of many classical works from Greek into Latin.
